Connect a source

Connect a database so Doram can learn how your data works.

Doram connects with a read-only user and never writes to your database. PostgreSQL is supported today. Other sources are listed on Connectors with their status.

Create a read-only user

Run this with your own database name and password. Repeat the last three lines for each schema Doram should read.

CREATE ROLE doram_reader WITH LOGIN PASSWORD 'choose-a-strong-password';
GRANT CONNECT ON DATABASE your_database TO doram_reader;
GRANT USAGE ON SCHEMA public TO doram_reader;
GRANT SELECT ON ALL TABLES IN SCHEMA public TO doram_reader;
ALTER DEFAULT PRIVILEGES IN SCHEMA public GRANT SELECT ON TABLES TO doram_reader;

If your database is behind a firewall, add Doram's IP addresses to its allow-list. You'll find them on the connect screen.

Connect

  1. Go to Settings → Databases → Add a database. During setup, this screen opens on its own.
  2. Choose PostgreSQL.
  3. Enter the host, port, database, username and password, or paste a connection string. Turn on Require SSL under Advanced if your database needs it.
  4. Leave the connection method on Direct. SSH tunnel and Private Connector are coming soon.
  5. Click Test connection, then connect. The first scan starts right away.

The first scan

The scan reads table structure, column types and relationships. It doesn't copy your data, and credentials are stored encrypted. If it stops early, you'll see one of these:

MessageWhat to do
One schema is lockedThe user can't read a schema. Run the grant shown on screen and retry, or continue without it.
This database is emptyNo tables were found. Check you connected the right database.
Scan failedCheck the details and try again.

You can re-scan, rename or disconnect a database from Settings → Databases.
